Study Group
A Soul Eater (Mild CroMa) One-Shot
Dr. Stine held up a size ten surgical knife, which glinted menacingly with the light cast through the classroom's windows.  "Now," he said, "Today, we're going to be dissecting this zebra."  He flicked the knife in the direction of a dead zebra, strapped to a table.  A few children winced at the sight.  "Can anyone tell me what cut we would use to begin the procedure?
Only two students – Kid and Maka, raised their hands.  Crona slumped lower in his seat.  He knew the answer – if one thing had helped from his mother's abuse, it was that he remembered things the first time they were said – but he absolutely hated being called on.  He didn't like having everyone in the room staring at him expectantly; it was nerve-racking and weird.
"Come on," said Dr. Stine, "Are you meaning to tell me that only Maka and Kid know the answer?  Maka, Kid, why don't we give someone else a chance?"  Maka and Kid frowned, lowering their hands.
Crona slumped lower in his seat, but froze as he realized that Stine was staring straight at him, smiling.  Please don't let him call on me! thought Crona desperately.
"Crona, how about you?" said Dr. Stine.
Crona said as quietly as possible, "A sagital cut."
"What was that?" asked Dr. Stine.
"A sagital cut," whimpered Crona, barely any louder.
"Come on, Crona," pried Dr. Stine, "We'll never know if your answer was right or not if we can't hear you."
Crona looked around.  Everyone was staring at him with this weird look on their faces, he didn't like it and he didn't know how to deal with it.  He hated everyone staring at him; hated it, hated it, hated it!
Crona sat up suddenly and shouted at the top of his lungs, "A SAGITAL CUT, DR. STINE, A SAGITAL CUT!"  Crona looked up, realizing people were giving him an even weirder look now, and sunk into his seat.  "A sagital cut, yeah..."
Dr. Stine smiled.  "See, you were right."  He looked up at the clock.  "Oh, would you look at that, class is over already.  Time just flies when you're having fun, doesn't it?"  Everyone rose up out of their seats, about to make their way to the door.  "Oh, yes, I never did mention it!" Everyone looked back at the Professor.  "We're taking exams on Monday to show how much you've improved since last time.  Have a good weekend."
Everyone stared at him like he just said Adam Lambert was his third cousin, waiting for him to say it was a joke and start laughing.  "What are you all standing there for; you have studying to do!" he said.
The room was sent into an instant panic.  Most were yelling about how it wasn't fair, some ran screaming out of the room, saying something about how they were going to fail, and then there were even the few like Ox and Kid, who smirked, knowing they'd do well.
Then there was Crona.  He stood up, hung his head, and walked silently to the doorway.
"Hey, Crona!" piped up a cheery voice.  Crona turned around to see Maka bouncing up to him and blushed, stepping back a bit.  Maka gestured to Liz, Patty, Tsubaki, Black Star, and Kid, who were all grouped together in the same location.  "We're studying as a group in the library, want to come?"
"Um...sure," he said, tugging at his collar a bit.
"Great!" she said.  "Come on, let's get to the library quickly so we can find a good spot!"  She beckoned to the others, and they followed suit.
. . .
At the library, they selected a table large enough for the full group.  Crona dumped all the books from his bag onto the table, putting them into a stack and shoving them aside.  Everyone else seemed to have done something else similar.  They all stared at each other, as if they weren't exactly sure how to start this.
Black Star jumped up from his seat onto my table and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Now that Black Star is here, this study group is ready to begin!"  The librarian gave him a death glare, and he retreated back down into his seat, flipped open a book, and stared at it.
"I say we start our studying on the principles of symmetry," said Kid, "The basic fundamentals of a perfectly balanced-"
"NO," cut off Liz, "We don't need you turning the rest of the world into weirdos."
"Okay, fine," said Kid, looking a bit disappointed, "Why not the fundamentals of test-taking?"
"That works," said Liz.
"Okay, step one.  You don't turn the test into a giraffe," he said, with a harsh glance at Patty, who looked crestfallen.
Patty suddenly looked up.  "What about a-"
"You can't turn it into a hippopotamus, either," he said flatly.  She looked down sadly.
"This is getting us nowhere!" said Black Star, "We need a new leader, like me!"
Tsubaki gently tugged on his sleeve and pulled him back down to his seat.  "What about you, Crona?  We haven't heard a word from you this whole time, but it seems you're very good at studying.
Crona sunk into his seat.  "Please, no, I've never studied in my life.  Can't someone else do it?"
Tsubaki looked confused a moment, but decided not to pry and turned to Maka.  "What about you, Maka?"
Maka smiled.  "I'd be happy to, is everyone okay with it?"  There was a murmur of agreement.  "Great!  Why don't we open our books about Weapon History to chapter 4, I think that's a good place to start."
As Crona pulled the book out of the stack, he didn't happen to notice a certain little black book slip out of the pile as well.
Black Star spoke up, "Maka, chapter 4 is boring, do we have to-"
He was answered with a thwack with a book on the side of his head.  "-On second thought, chapter 4 sounds good."
"Crona, why don't you read?" asked Maka.
"Um...okay, if you think I should read."  He looked down at the book.  "Weapons as we know them today began surfacing in the 12th century, one of the first being the Holy Sword Excalibur."  Several people made faces at the name.  "The partnership between weapon and meister was less equal, and weapons were held with much higher-"
Ragnarok shifted from his perch atop Crona's head.  "This is boring, let's study something else!"  He swept down to the pile of books, stopping at a little black one.  "Ooh, what's this?"
Crona's eyes widened when he saw the book.  "Ragnarok, please set that book down, surely you can select a different one to-"
"Is this a diary?" he asked.  "How girly!  I have an idea, let's read it!"
"I have a better idea, give it back!" said Crona, reaching for the book.  Ragnarok held it just out of his reach, flipping open the book.
"Ragnarok – give – it – back!" said Crona, making several more futile grabs for the book.
"January Fifth," said Ragnarok, with a certain mocking tone, "Today Maka had me come along with everyone for an extracurricular lesson in Germany.  She's so nice and pretty – Haha!  Crona, you have a crush on MAKA?  It's just like you to pick a girl without physical appeal!"
"Ragnarok, quit it!"
Ragnarok ignored him, turning to the next page, reading aloud in an even more mocking tone.  "Today, after our lesson, Tsubaki and Black Star convinced us to have fun in Berlin.  There was a very nice dress shop we visited, and Maka looked nice in all of them.  This is hilarious!  Why didn't I know about this diary of yours?"
"Ragnarok, the point is that people don't get to read it, and I don't think I can handle any more of you reading it out loud to everyone!"  With a sudden surge of awareness, Crona realized that this was true – not only was Ragnarok reading his diary, he was reading it out loud to everyone nearby.  Crona just barely dared to turn his head to the side and look back at everyone.  Sure enough, all eyes were on him.  Lovely.  Just lovely.
There was a long moment of awkward silence.  Crona saw that Maka's face was red.  Great.  Not only did she just find out, she was embarrassed.  This wasn't going over at all like it did in Broadway musicals.
Tsubaki broke the silence.  "Crona, is that true?"
Crona stared downward and mumbled, "Yes."
Patty, being Patty, started clapping.  "Yaaaaaaayy!!  Let's all throw a party and celebrate the happy couple!"
"There is no happy couple, Patty," said Liz, holding her hand to her face, "This is what we call a one-sided romance."
"Really, Liz?" asked Kid.  "Because it doesn't look very one-sided to me."  He gestured, and everyone followed his hand's direction.
Right there, Maka had her arms around Crona's neck, head against his shoulder.
This is my first ever Soul Eater fanfic, so I thought I'd make it a good one: CroMa, my favorite pairing! I'm actually quite pleased with how in-character everyone is, and I think it was even a bit funny at points. Hope you enjoy.
